Even though tourmaline was discovered in Brazil, its name has its origins in Sri Lanka. Derived from the Sinhalese language, “tormalli” means “mixed stone”. This is due to the stone’s high sensitivity during its creation, which causes it to come in all possible variations of color. But it is also this sensitivity that makes’ findings of clear and intense color a rare occurrence.
