Forming the centerpiece of the Imperial State Crown of the british monarchy, the “Black Prince” is the largest un-cut red spinel in the world. It dates back to the 14th century and weighs ~170 cts. Spinel is hard to find and known for its amazing clarity and rich color. In Burma, home of the famous Burma rubies, spinel is refered to as Nat Thwe, meaning “polished by the spirits”.
